Gaui Hurricane 425 parts arrived

Finally after a few months of waiting the first part of my two part parcel has arrived from Hobbyking.com via Singapore, this will enable me to complete the Gaui 425 kit that I brought back in May.

Currently the Gaui is sat on my bookcase complete with all servos, gyro, UBEC, ESC, receiver and blades and is only awaiting the canopy, motor, batteries and cabling to complete the build.

So far the following parts have been used.
  • Cyclic servo - HS 625 HB
  • Tail servo - MKS8910A+
  • Gyro - Phoenixtech GT9
  • ESC - Hobbywing Pentium 60A OPTO
  • UBEC - Hobbywing 5-7.5A
  • Receiver - Spektrum AR7000
  • Motor - Turnigy 500 H3126 1300kV
Pete has been using the same batteries (3s 2200mah) as the 450's but in series and had flying times of about 4:30 minutes, this is with a 1600kV motor. Hopefully with the 1300kV motor this will increase to 5:30 minutes.

Adrian is also in the process of completing his Tarot/Align 500 frankenheli so soon all three of us should be flying big birds across the sky at our field.

Banked turns

This week I replaced the part for my faulty tail-hub and got out flying again. Friday was a bit on the windy side with strong gusts, however, I have found now that I can fly and hover in wind without too much pressure and the only time I really notice wind now is when landing.

This session was spent trying to nail knife-edge banked turns and I would consider it a success with counter-clockwise turns, however, with clockwise I am still getting too much transitional lift and having difficulty keeping the tail correct through the turn. Managed a successful 4 packs though without any incident.

Back home later on the sim I discovered that much more rudder input is required with CCW turns compared to CW turns and eventually managed proper CW turns on the sim, however, these were nowhere as steep as my CCW turns - more practice required

Tail-hub issues

Can you guess the cause of this little incident....

Yes the bolt from the tail blade holder to the tail hub sheared in flight, fortunately I the heli was only 8 feet from the ground and I hit throttle hold as soon as I heard the noise. Made for an interesting landing, again pirouetting and landing (I seem to be getting better at it).

Damage only the tail hub bolt, lost the tail blade holder and broke one of the small linkages.

Pete's Gaui 425 maidened

An early one this time 6am up the flying field and Pete brought along his Gaui 425 for a maiden, hovers really stably and the blade noise is amazing

All went really well as you can see in the video, only a few minutes and one lipo was a bit puffy so flight time need to be established still but hopeful to get between 4 and 5 minutes.

With my 450 I tried to nail banked turns, all went well and no crashes for one but I keep gaining far too much speed coming out of the turn and this translates into height on the return run - more practice.
